Privacy Policy
Last updated: 17 October 2026
Kibitz (“the app”) is a chess trainer for Android. This policy explains what data the app handles. Questions: didapphelp@gmail.com.
In short
- Kibitz has no accounts and no servers of its own. Your games, analyses, puzzles, statistics, settings and profile photo are stored only on your device.
- The app shows ads from Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data to show and measure ads, as described below.
Data stored on your device
Games you play or import, engine analyses, puzzle progress, ratings, achievements, settings, the Lichess / Chess.com usernames you link and your optional profile photo are saved in the app’s private storage. They never leave your device unless you share them yourself (for example “Share PGN”). Uninstalling the app or clearing its data deletes them. Android’s own device backup may include this data if you have backup turned on.
Lichess and Chess.com
If you link a Lichess or Chess.com account or look up a player, the app sends that public username to the public Lichess (lichess.org) or Chess.com (api.chess.com) API to download that player’s public games. No password is ever requested. These services’ own privacy policies apply to those requests. The app also downloads new public puzzles from the Lichess puzzle API; no personal data is sent with those requests.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
The app uses the Google Mobile Ads SDK (AdMob) and Google’s User Messaging Platform. AdMob may collect and process:
- device identifiers such as the Android advertising ID,
- approximate location derived from your IP address,
- ad interactions, app usage and diagnostics (for example crash and performance data).
This data is used to serve, personalise (where permitted) and measure ads and to prevent fraud. Where required by law (for example in the EEA and the UK) the app asks for your consent before personalised ads are shown, and you can change your choice at any time in Settings → Ad privacy. You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in Android settings. More information: How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, the app shows daily reminders and a daily puzzle. These are created on the device; no data is sent anywhere for them. You can turn them off in the app’s settings or in Android settings.
Children
Kibitz is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Open-source components
Kibitz includes the Stockfish chess engine (GNU GPL v3) and other open-source components; see Settings → Credits & licences in the app. The engine’s source code and build files: github.com/bokaranovic/kibitz-stockfish.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
